Two headed goals at the start of the second half were enough to silence critics of Berwick Rangers’ first half performance against East Stirlingshire in Ladbrokes League 2 at Shielfield on Saturday ( Oct.3rd ).
Rangers’ defence was caught cold when the visitors launched their first real attack of the match after 15 minutes, Nathan Shepherd netting after a header came down off the bar. Two minutes into the second half, Blair Henderson equalised and shortly afterwards, Darren Lavery put Rangers in front. The goals clearly gave Berwick renewed confidence but they were unable to kill off the game with a third and had to survive some scary moments near the end when ‘Shire got too close for comfort.
**On Tuesday night, October 6th, Berwick entertain Forfar Athletic in the SPFL Development League East, kick off 7:45 p.m. Forfar won this competition last season.
***With no league game on Saturday, Oct. 10th, in what is officially a first team fixture, Berwick host Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale in the Final of the City Cup held over from last season. Kick off is at 3:00 p.m. The match is the Edinburgh club’s prize for winning the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup. LTHV also took the East of Scotland League title and thus automatically qualified to play in the current Scottish Cup campaign in which they have already eliminated two Junior clubs including East Super League champions Kelty Hearts. LTHV have been rewarded with a home tie against Montrose in the Second Round on October 24th. Berwick will be away to Annan Athletic, a disappointing draw in view of the fact the teams play each other four times in League 2.
