Berwick Rangers are featured in a new book out this month entitled ‘Minnows United:Adventures at the Fringes of the Beautiful Game’ by Mat Guy.
It is Mat’s second book and includes a chapter focusing on a match in Berwick on a bitterly cold day in 2016. Written in praise of ‘the glorious minnow’, it is a celebration of the vibrancy and passion of football far from the big time which was perfectly encapsulated by his experience on that cold afternoon at Shielfield. Currently in the area researching material for his third book is freelance journalist Gavin Bell. Provisionally entitled ‘Because it is Saturday’ and likely to come out next season, it will be about small clubs playing in the lower divisions of both the English and Scottish Leagues. Motherwell fan Gavin has already met several Berwick Rangers Supporters Trust Board members individually to glean information and opinions relating to the club and has also spent time at Shielfield where he heard some interesting tales from long serving club man Ian ‘Pea’ Oliver.
A former foreign correspondent for ‘The Times’, Gavin now also writes travel articles for ‘The Telegraph’. For one of his previous publications, he sailed from San Francisco to retrace the South Pacific voyages of 19th century author Robert Louis Stevenson, ending his trip in Samoa where Stevenson died in 1894.
