SPFL Development League East
BERWICK RANGERS 1 LIVINGSTON 2
A goal two minutes from time gave the visitors a barely deserved third Development League win of the season over Berwick in an entertaining game for which both teams deserve credit especially considering the conditions. Whilst Livingston shaded the first half, Rangers dominated the second but were unable to turn their pressure into goals.
Berwick did open the scoring after only seven minutes. Gary Windram outjumped his marker to head the ball downwards, Bradley Barrett judging its bounce perfectly on a still relatively firm pitch to lob it into the net.
Home keeper Sean Brennan saved from Scott Hay after his defenders twice insisted on returning the ball to Livi players. With the visitors still on the front foot, Brennan used both fists to punch out an 18th minute corner. Unfortunately, it was his poor kick which again gifted possession to the opposition and led to a 24th minute equaliser. The ball was soon swung across from the right to a trialist number eleven who netted in style from beyond the far post.
Brennan made a double save in the 37th minute, again denying Hay and then getting down to thwart Levi Kinchant’s bid to crack home the rebound.
Rangers were struggling to break down a well organised defence before losing Barrett to a knee complaint. However, immediately before and after the break, good chances came their way. First, the trialist who replaced Barrett hit the post after Windram and Grant Rose worked a way through. On the resumption, Jordan Pettigrew leapt to make a one handed save from Windram after Rose hooked the ball in his direction.
Rose went on to knock a Paul Simpson free kick a foot over the bar, Simpson again supplier when he hit an angled shot behind the goal. Jack Gillan made ground but as he was poised to shoot, centre half David Wilson calmly took the ball from him. Ross Aitchison’s determination and Rose’s skill set up an 85th minute chance for sub Evan Smith but his shot was saved by Pettigrew.
With the pitch increasingly churning up as the game progressed, Livi’s ball runners including-unusually-a trialist captain, rarely posed the same threat as in the opening 45 minutes. Yet, one of them had the last say. Brennan dropped a corner ball and though Berwick managed to kick it out of the box, Kinchant was waiting to send it back over a now unguarded goal line.
