SPFL Reserve League 2
BERWICK RANGERS RESERVES 2 QUEEN’S PARK RESERVES 4
After a well earned 1-all draw away to League leaders Livingston Reserves the previous week, Berwick Reserves were in pole position with a 2-1 half time lead in this one. Yet, from the moment the second half kicked off, the Glasgow boys dominated, scoring three times to secure a League double over the young Rangers.
It looked promising for Berwick in the opening ten minutes. A lively attack saw Grant Rose play the ball wide to a trialist no. 7 who controlled it well before forcing Evan Collumbine into a save by his near post. A venomous shot from Kieran Jack then flew past the same upright.
Berwick, rescued by a flag for offside in the 12th minute after Queen’s Park had the ball in the net, went on to open the scoring eight minutes later when ROSE headed in their first corner of the match, sent over by the trialist.
To their credit, both sides, but more impressively the visitors, were determined to keep the ball on the ground. Queen’s showed again what they could do when Stephen Bradley took aim after running on to Josh Black’s through ball only to be denied by Shea Dowie’s spectacular save.
The visitors were briefly level when, in the 35th minute, CAMMY DICKSON finished off at the far post following teammates attacking in numbers up the right. Five minutes on, Berwick’s trialist held on to the ball, twisted and turned inside the ‘D’ before firing, the ball helped into the net by the outstretched boot of defender NICK McALISTER.
A minute after the break, Dowie tipped Josh Black’s attempt over the bar and just ahead of Queen’s second equaliser, the same player hit the post. AARON BLACK ( no relation ) made it 2 apiece by lobbing into an empty net following a defensive mix up over a ball which took a firm bounce. There was more defensive woe in the 69th minute. Rangers allowed themselves to be trapped deep inside their own half before conceding a free kick. BRADLEY hit it in textbook style leaving Dowie rooted to the spot.
Immediately after introducing their only two subs, Queen’s Park again hit the post. They enjoyed more success seven minutes from time. Josh Black showed class down the right to set up namesake AARON for his second goal of the evening.
