Scottish Sun journalist Matt Bendoris and photographer Andy Barr were at Shielfield on the afternoon of Monday, June 2nd, to meet Berwick Rangers Supporters Trust officials Michael Smyth and Bill Purvis. The Sun men were in Berwick to prepare a feature on the town in relation to September’s referendum on Scottish independence.
Matt had already conducted a series of ‘vox pop’ interviews with Berwick residents prior to coming to the football ground. He was interested in the club’s history and in hearing fans’ perspectives on the possible implications and ramifications for Berwick Rangers should Scotland leave the United Kingdom. The session lasted for about half an hour with Andy, no stranger to snapping the football action at Shielfield, rounding it off by taking a set of pictures.
The report should appear in the Scottish Sun in the week beginning Monday, June 9th. That date will mark 100 days to the vote and throughout the week, the paper will be devoting special coverage to it. This will include, at some point, the feature on Berwick.
