East Stirlingshire 2 Berwick Rangers 0
Around three dozen spectators watched this SPFL Development League East match at Stirling University’s Gannochy Sports Centre on a mild Monday night ( September 29th ). Though Berwick manager Colin Cameron was in the team, goalkeeper Billy Bald was captain for the night.
Bald had little chance of stopping ‘Shire’s first goal. Paul Brennan was allowed a free run inside Rangers’ penalty area which ended with him sending the ball into the corner of the net. Not long after, in the 17th minute, he took advantage of a communication mix up between Bald and Gregor Watson to slot home number two.
East Stirling were adept at closing down Berwick in the first half meaning Rangers never seriously troubled keeper Sean Quinn. At the other end, Bald punched away a Brennan lob before play was held up for a full minute just ahead of the interval whilst the referee admonished two ‘Shire officials on the sideline for loudly protesting over the booking of Alan Deans.
Berwick seemed invigorated by boss Cameron’s talk to his team squeezed along the bench in the dugout at half time and gave as good as they got in the second period. Yet scoring chances for either side were at a premium. Billy Vidler did hit the bar for the ‘home’ side whilst Bald comfortably dealt with an inswinging free kick from the same player. Rangers now looked tighter at the back with Watson overcoming his first half calamity to break up several ‘Shire raids down the right.
Berwick’s more promising attacks tended to flounder against the centre back pairing of Jordan Tapping and former Berwick player Michael Bolochoweckyj. One of their best chances of scoring arrived when Watson went up for a Scott Maxwell corner but only succeeded in heading the ball high over Quinn’s bar.
