***Berwick Rangers came from 0-2 down at half time to claim a well deserved extra time victory at home to Championship club Alloa Athletic last Saturday ( Aug. 1st ). Iain Flannigan scored twice for the Wasps in a first half which had the atmosphere of a pre-season friendly. Things hotted up in the second half as Berwick sprang into life. Darren Lavery latched on to a long punt from keeper Kevin Walker and beat the chasing cover to blast the ball high into the net. Sub David Morris levelled with a flying header from Ewan McNeil’s cross.
In the first part of extra time, David Banjo was credited with the winner, the hand of an Alloa defender helping his header from a corner ball trickle over the line.
It was a pity that only 405 fans were at the game though traditionally, League Cup attendances are on the low side plus, after last season’s disappointments, Berwick Rangers still have to convince some people that better days lie ahead. This result should have helped.
****Berwick Rangers Under 20s were beaten 5-1 away to Juniors Dunbar United in a friendly on Saturday ( Aug. 1st ). Regan Graham gave Berwick the lead from the spot against a team who included a handful of former Berwick Reserves’ players in their squad, one of whom, Sam Young, was among the home scorers.
